A notable vacation

During a road trip to the west, I jotted tidbits to capture the “essence” of our trip. Maybe some will sound typical to your family vacations, too.

*Second only to childbirth, the sixth hour of a road trip strips privacy, wreaks havoc on one’s appearance and tests a mother’s threshold of both pain and patience.

*Because of a flat tire, we really experienced the Rocky Mountains.

*Stranded roadside, tractor trailers barreling a few feet alongside us, praying we would be able to locate the number for roadside assistance, our youngest rolls his eyes and says, “Great. Now it’s gonna be like 1:30 before we eat lunch.”

*The man who fixed our flat tire was Paul. His canine companion’s name: Oakley. They both had the sniffles.

* As we were getting dinner at Taco Bell in Richfield, Utah, the employees said they just received an award for being  #1 in sales and service. A news crew was to arrive the next day. Such good people in Richfield, Utah.

*While sharing hotel breakfasts with other travelers, it feels a shame we don’t know one another. Some people stumble into the dining room looking as if they just rolled out of bed. Some come freshly showered, with wet hair, not quite ready for the day. Others are not only dressed, they are polished and shining. They grab a cup of coffee and hustle off to greet their important day. Breakfast guests are like family members in that bagel and muffin room--yet we never meet any of them. Weird.

Here’s wishing you a wonderful 2011 vacation season! Take notes.
